Carriageway Profiles

Introduction

This section provides information on what Carriageway Profiles are, as well as instructions on how to set them up and use them to set the operating mode of a carriageway of a particular section. There is also a feature to enable the system to calculate expected travel times along the carriageway.

Within the Clearway™ application, a Carriageway Profile represents a state for both the carriageway and sections to be operating in.  It also, depending on the mode, has an effect on the rules that apply to the carriageway. For example you can place a section in maintenance which will suppress all AID alarms. Or you can apply maintenance mode where you suppress all vehicles alarms but still alarm for pedestrians detected in the road.

Profile Editor

Name: The name of the Profile.

Description: The description of the Profile.

Speed Limit: The Speed Limit enables us to calculate expected travel times when there is no traffic in the carriageway or section. The speed can be set for the whole carriageway and/or individual sections.

Default Operating Mode: This allows you to select the default mode for the carriageway. This can be set for the whole carriageway and/or individual sections.

The available modes which can be set for each section are:

Normal: Default mode - all AID rules are active and traffic is expected to behave normally.

Maintenance: The section is in maintenance and no AID rules / alarms are active - all activity in this section is ignored.

Maintenance with Pedestrian: The section is in maintenance and no AID rules / alarms are active, except any of the Pedestrian / Person detection rules.

Contraflow: The sections are in contraflow so we are expecting traffic to moving in the wrong direction - all reversing rules / alarms are suppressed.

Adding a new Carriageway Profile

To create a profile on a carriageway:

  1. Enable the Configuration Mode, then select the carriageway in question. In the Configuration Panel, select the Actions menu, which will show a menu of options that can be applied to the carriageway.

  2. Select Profile, which will launch the Profile Editor for the selected carriageway.

  3. All carriageways will always have a profile labelled Default Operating Mode.  To create another profile, select the New button.  The window will be placed into edit mode, and a new profile will be created.  An entry will be placed under the existing profile in the list.

  4. The Name and Description can be changed by typing into the relevant text box.

  5. To the right of the description field is a Speed Limit field. Here you can specify the speed limit for all of the carriageway. Entering a speed will update all of the sections below with that speed:

  6. Below that is an icon labelled Default Operating Mode.  This icon can be 'clicked' with the left mouse button:

  7. As can be seen from the screen shot, the default mode for the entire carriageway is now set to Contraflow.  If you continue to click the icon, the mode will cycle through all the available options.

  8. Once you are happy with the change made to your profile, you can press Save to make the profile permanent.

Video

The following video displays the process of creating a new profile for an entire carriageway, with Maintenance mode and a speed limit of 8.9 meters per second:

Delete a Profile

  1. To delete a profile, select the profile you wish to delete and then press the Delete button.

  2. Confirm or cancel the profile deletion.

The default profile cannot be deleted. However if a custom profile has been applied to a carriageway it can still be deleted. This will leave the carriageway in its current state so you should apply the default profile or another custom profile if you want to undo the settings from the profile you have just deleted.

Edit a Profile

  1. To edit a selected profile, press the Edit button.

  2. The name and description text boxes become editable and you can change the Speed Limit and Operating Mode of the carriageway.

  3. To make the change permanent, press Save. To ignore the changes, press Cancel.

If the carriageway speed is changed in the default Speed Limit field it will update all the sections to that speed, so if there were previously configured sections with a different setting to the default then this would have been changed too.

Changing a Section or Sections Speed Limit

For each profile that we have seen so far, we have just changed the Speed Limit for the overall carriageway. However, there will be a situation where a carriageway needs to have certain sections with different speed limits, for example, if there are roadworks which would slow down the expected travel time. You can change the speed for an individual section by clicking in speed limit field for that section to edit the speed limit:

If a section speed is left at 0 then the carriageway speed limit takes precedence.

Changing a Section or Sections Operating Mode

Similarly, we have only set the operating mode for the overall carriageway. Again, there may be a situation where a carriageway needs to have certain sections in a different mode. In this case, you can change the operating mode for an individual section. To do this you just need to click on each section. The section will then cycle through each mode.

For example, in this carriageway, we have changed the operating mode for sections 178 to 183 to the Contraflow mode and sections 184 to 189 to the Maintenance mode from the default Normal mode.

This video shows how to edit a Carriageway Profile. In this example the description, some section modes and speed limits are updated and saved:

Apply the Profile to a Carriageway

  1. Once the profiles have been created, you have the ability to set the operating mode of the carriageway and sections by pressing the Apply button.

  2. When the profile has been applied, the carriageway will show icons that represent the operating mode of the sections.

  3. To switch back to the default mode, just select the default profile and press Apply.

Schedule a Profile to a Carriageway

It is possible to schedule a profile to a carriageway.

  1. Highlight the profile that you wish to schedule and select the Schedule button when configuring a schedule:

  2. This opens the System Event Scheduler:

  3. Complete the System Event Scheduler with the relevant details and date, ensuring that you apply it to the correct carriageway:

  4. Click Save to save the new schedule:
