PPI Display

Introduction

This page covers the SafeGuard™ Configuration Application PPI. Here you will be able to connect to view the live data and to edit the Alarm Areas.

For more information about SafeGuard™ please refer to this documentation: Application Overview.

PPI Display

The PPI on the Configuration Application Dashboard is a live two-dimensional view of the radar display based around a geographical interface. The radar data is displayed in green with Data Points, Alarm Areas, the Radar Info Panel, and in some circumstances an Area Alarms Panel. It is updated once a second.

Home Icon: Returns the PPI Display to the home view, and resets the rotation of the PPI Display to 0.0°.

Pan Arrows: These pan the PPI Display along the points of the compass, in small increments.

You can also use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom the PPI Display in and out, in small increments.

Rotation Arrows: The arrows on the rotation controls will rotate the PPI Display to the previous or next 10 degree increment.

Rotation Slide: Alternatively, you can use the slider to rotate the PPI Display. By default, the initial rotation is at 0.0°.

In the example below, the default rotation is at 0.0°:

In the next example the rotation of the PPI Display has been changed to a 90.0° clockwise rotation:

The coordinates on the bottom right are always from the perspective of the radar.

Area Alarms Panel

The Area Alarms Panel shows the alarm status via an alarm indicator for each area through a colour-coded circular icon. If an indicator turns from green (OK) to red (not OK) then an alarm has been given.

The Area Alarms Panel will only be displayed if an alarm has been triggered.

Radar Info Panel

This is an overview of key radar details:

🔴: The health status of the radar of the alarm will be represented through a colour-coded circular icon; green = OK and red = not OK.

Model No.: The model number of the radar.

Serial No.: The serial number of the radar.

Range (bins): The total number of measurements taken for each azimuth sample. The calculated range of radar is Range Resolution x Range in Bins. Bins are individual cells measured by radars and the bin size must be rounded to the nearest 8 bins.

Bin Size (m): The size of each bin which is detected by the radar.

Range: This is the area of radar coverage.

Speed: This is configured rotation speed of the radar, displayed in milli-Hertz. (Hz x 1000).

Azimuths: This is the total number of azimuth samples taken by the radar in a single rotation.

Pkt Rate Hz): This is the average rate of data packets being transferred from the radar.

Alarm Areas

Up to six configured Alarm Areas will be displayed on the PPI. These are outlined in white. Alarm Areas will only be displayed on the PPI if they have been enabled in the Application Settings: Application Settings | Area Rule Configuration.

Brightness Control

You can use the Brightness Control to reduce the brightness of the FFT Data. In the example below the default setting is set to maximum:

The next example shows the FFT Data at the dimmest setting, which is at 40%:

The last example is set to halfway between the maximum and minimum setting:

Area Edit Controls

The Area Edit Controls allow you to edit one area at a time.

Edit: Select the Edit icon to amend the area settings.

Save: Click the Save button to save your changes to the application.

Cancel: Click the Cancel button to discard any changes.

To edit an area:

  1. To select an area you can click on the area on the PPI, or by selecting the area tab on the Area Rule Configuration section of the Settings page.

  2. Click the Edit icon:

  3. The outline of the area in edit mode will display green circular Area Points and square purple Nodes:

  4. You can then move the Points using the mouse by left clicking and dragging them to create the desired shape (this will also update the X and Y coordinates in the Settings tab):

  5. To add an Area Point right mouse click on a Node. A new Area Point will appear with two new Nodes (in purple) either side:

  6. You can then drag the new point to the desired location.

  7. To remove a Point, right mouse click on an area Point. The point will be removed and the area will redraw appropriately.

  8. Note: There is validation, so changing a point to an invalid point, the system will not change the bearing, but it will change the radius.

  9. Once you are happy with the desired area shape click the Save icon:

  10. Alternatively, if you wish to cancel your amendments click the Cancel icon:

  11. Alternatively, you can edit each of the points by changing their X and Y coordinates within the Area Rule Configuration section of the Settings tab:

Data Points

Data Points (any peaks above threshold values) are shown as red dots on the PPI.

Data Controls

Pause / Play

The live data on the PPI can be paused with the Pause button:

and resumed with the Play button:

In pause mode you will be able to click on a Data Point which will display information on the Data Navigation Tab. Please refer to: Radar Point Data | Navigation Data for more information.

Filter

The Filter button gives you an option to only see Data Points within the Alarm Areas.

Range Lines

The Range Lines button allows you to toggle the range lines On or Off:

On:

Off:

Mirror

The Mirror button allows you to toggle to a mirror image of the radar data. This is useful if you wish to configure a radar which is upside down.

Normal (Mirror Off):

Mirror On:

Mouse Coordinates

Your mouse’s position when hovering or clicking on the PPI is displayed in radar coordinates here.

Log Panel

The Log Panel is part of the PPI. It shows major updates from the radar, including connects, disconnects, alarms, configuration changes, data pauses and errors:

These logs are kept locally for as long as the application is open, and will show up to 100,000 messages before it overwrites them (oldest first).

Log File

There is a detailed log file that is saved called Boson.txt within the Configuration Application folder. Here is an example:
