Overview

It is important that you have a good understanding of the overall system before you progress to installation and software configuration. In addition, due to the distributed nature of the software, it is critical that the system is implemented correctly on enterprise level network hardware. This documentation will not cover the specifics of the network configuration so it is assumed that anyone designing a Navtech system has a solid understand of enterprise networking.

It is vital that the individual systems comprising a complete installation are all timesynced to within millisecond accuracy in order to avoid false readings and the risk of missed observations.

Network Requirements

The network must be capable of handling large amounts of data which is streamed 24x7 at a consistent rate. This puts a different type of load on the network and demands more of hardware compared with more typical data loads associated with office data or other communication links where data is far more variable. Although all modern networking hardware can theoretically handle these demands, in reality only good quality, enterprise equipment can perform the task effectively.

Network Switches

Good quality switches with acceptable switching speed and throughput are mandatory. They do not need to be expensive, entry level enterprise switches are usually more than adequate, such as the HPE 1800 series.

Home network & SOHO equipment, including switches, routers and home plug are not adequate for the demands of reliable 24x7 operation that the radar system requires.
