This section deals with the creation of a virtual dual carriageway that mimics the actual carriageway that will be beside which where the radar or radars have been physically installed.

It is necessary to have a virtual carriageway in order to accurately detect, analyse and report incidents observed by the radar - the . The virtual carriageway creates parameters around the actual detection area.

Info

The ClearWay™ program cannot function without at least one carriageway.

  2. You

...

  1. can now use the nodes of theplumb line in order to plot your carriageway

...

The carriageway plotting tools are these:

...

  1. along the centre of the road:
    a. Hold down the Ctrl key to move the entire carriageway.

...

  1. b. Select individual circular nodes to place and change direction of carriageway sections.

...

  1. c. Right

...

  1. Click on the square graphic to create more circular nodes.

...

  1. d. Right

...

  1. Click on the circular nodes to delete them.

...

  1. e. Zoom in on your carriageway for greater detail with either your mouse, track pad or using the toggle direction and zoom keys in the top left hand corner of the Open Street Map display.

  2. The Open Street Map or Google Map gives a visual guide to the position of the carriageway, but if your radars are live, they should also be transmitting visual data. You can use a combination of themapand the visual data from the radar in order to accurately plot your carriageway.

  3. In the example below we have used the Open Street Map for clarity. The white end nodes have been moved to the start and end of the carriageway by selecting them with the mouse and moving them, and the centre node to middle of the carriageway. Note that the direction of the carriageway is heading south:

  4. In the example below more nodes have been added to follow the curve of the road:

  5. You can zoom into the carriageway to check that it has been drawn correctly. The nodes have been positioned in the centre of the dual carriageway where the carriageway separation is located:

Info

You can edit the shape, direction and nodal points of the carriageway after plotting and completing the Create and Draw New Carriageway wizard. The plum line plan is not permanent. You can also move back and forth between the stages of the wizard if you wish to return to editing the carriageway in its plumb line state.

Carriageway Configuration

...

Once your initial carriageway is plotted , you can return to the Create and Draw New Carriageway window. Now you You can now configure the carriageway and its Rules - these decide what objects and behaviours you wish the radar to detect.

  1. In the example below, the Create Dual Carriageway option has been selected with two lanes and the Lane Width and Carriageway Separation have been amended to suit the carriageway on the PPI. For more information about these and other settings please refer to: https://navtechradar.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/TUN/pages/edit-v2/789512667#Carriageway-Wizard-Settings and https://navtechradar.

  2. When you have selected the rules, click Next and you are given the opportunity to view the carriageway as it has been rendered by the system. You can then amend the lane width and carriageway separation if desired by going back to the previous screen. Once you are happy with the way your carriageway has been drawn you can then change the key attributes of each selected rule. Each has a separate tab. Once satisfied with your Rules' configuration, click Finish:

Carriageway and Draw New Carriageway Wizard Settings

...

Create Dual Carriageway: Select if your carriageway is a dual carriageway - traffic flowing in both directions.
Section Length (m): The length of the segments your carriageway will be divided into in order to divide the surveillance of the carriageway equally between the radar.

Number of Lanes: The number of lanes on each carriage way - each direction of traffic.
Carriageway Separation (m): The distance of the barrier between the carriageways. Only applicable to a dual carriagewayUse Single Lane Width: This option will set all lanes to the same Lane Width value. The Lane Width fields within the Lane Grid below will then be disabled. If you clear the check box, these fields become editable and you can then set each Lane Width independently.
Lane Width (m): The width of one lane in your carriageway.
Section Length (m): The length of the segments your carriageway will be divided into in order to divide the surveillance of the carriageway equally between the radarLane Grid:

Lane: This is the number of the lane.

Reversed Lanes: Select this option if you require a carriageway with bidirectional traffic, for example, Single Carriageways. This will then allow you to select which lane you wish to have with a reversed direction.

Lane Width: This determines the width of each lane. If you are using Use Single Lane Width then these fields will be disabled.

Carriageway Separation (m): The distance of the barrier between the carriageways. This is only applicable to a dual carriageway, and will be hidden if Create Dual Carriageway has not been selected.

Right Hand Drive: Select if your carriageway is in a country with right hand side drive.

...

Virtual Debris Tracking Areas: Selected by default. This forces the software to generate appropriate debris detection areas that match the carriageway. These areas are created dynamically when the software starts and when any changes are made to the layout of the carriageway.Bidirectional Lanes: Select this option if you require a carriageway with bidirectional traffic, for example, a single carriageway. This will then allow you to select which lane you wish to have with a reversed direction
Default Rules: all AID (Automatic Incident Detection) rules are selected by default, however you can deselect the rules you don’t need.

Once you have selected the rules, click Next and you are given the opportunity to amend the key attributes of each selected rule:
